Creating New Versions

You can create as many versions for a document as you need. You can either take an original document and create a version for it, or you can take the active version and create a version for it.

You can also create a new version for a master document and all its references. This capability is supported for both MicroStation references and AutoCAD xrefs. When the new versions are created, the set relationship between the new version of the master document and the new versions of its references are maintained. However, whether or not the active version of the master document will be linked to the active versions of its references, or to the new versions of the references, depends on the datasource setting, Lock reference documents to versions:

  • If this datasource setting is off, the active version of the master document will be linked to the active versions of its references.
  • If this datasource setting is on, the active version of the master document will be linked to the new versions of its references.

A document can only have one active version. If needed, you can switch the active version by taking a non-active version and making it the active version.

Note: A version may also be created to resolve a document creation conflict that occurs, for example, as the result of copying or moving a document into a folder that already contains a document with the same document or file name.
Note: If the Document > New > Version option is disabled for you, it is possible that you do not have permission to create versions (if your user setting Document > Can create version is turned off), or that the administrator has configured custom workflow rules for this datasource. When the Workflow Rules Engine is installed (an option of the ProjectWise Explorer installer) and the administrator has imported the delivered example workflow rules (through ProjectWise Administrator), the Document > New > Version option will be disabled, as the example workflow rules are configured to create versions through the pre-configured operations instead.
